Description:
apply for this job
The UCLA Department of Physiological Science invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor. Exceptional candidates may be considered at a high rank. We seek applicants with a particular interest in the new area of molecular systems biology with a vision toward understanding of complex physiological systems (see below). The successful candidate will be expected to participate in undergraduate and graduate teaching and to establish a vigorous, externally funded research program.
Please submit applications online (click button above) including a CV, description of research, and copies of key publications. Please note that three letters of recommendation are required with instructions for their submission online. Applications will be reviewed beginning October 5, 2009, but applications received after this date will also be considered until the position is filled. For further information please contact Arthur P. Arnold, Search Committee Chair. UCLA is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
We seek a new faculty member in the area of systems biology and physiology who has demonstrated excellence in addressing fundamental questions in physiology via systems-based approaches, for example, high-throughput technologies, bioinformatics and computational biology, biological network analysis, genomics, epigenomics and/or proteomics. We define systems biology/physiology as the study of emergent properties of systems that are not predicted from knowledge of individual system components. Partly the field is defined by an impatience to go beyond studying function only at the single gene or modular level. In the end, the components, genes, or modules interact and must be understood in the aggregate, as their influence is integrated to produce the properties of the whole system. This approach will be assisted by sophisticated computational or quantitative methods and bioinformatics to measure numerous system components simultaneously, whole genome and network studies, etc.
We are interested in candidates exploring any area of physiology. However, the expertise of our current faculty centers on neuroscience and muscle biology, and we wish to expand our expertise beyond those areas. All members of our Department participate in teaching of undergraduate and graduate students.
The UCLA biomedical research community is a wonderful place to work. The faculty in this community comprise one of the world’s premier centers for biological research. The UCLA research community has a proud tradition of openness that fosters communication and collaboration of faculty across institutional boundaries, both within the biological sciences and with the physical sciences and engineering.
